Use this Framework to Simplify Any Problem
Learn how to use tree diagrams to quickly get to the root cause of any problem
One of the greatest superpowers you can develop in life—especially as a Product Manager—is the ability to simplify complex problems. No matter your role, the more senior you become, the more people will bring you challenging issues and expect quick, structured, and insightful solutions. A key skill that sets successful PMs apart is the ability to break down seemingly overwhelming problems into smaller, digestible, and analyzable components.
How do you do that? Simple: by using Tree Diagrams.
What is a Tree Diagram?
A tree diagram is a structured way to break down a problem into mutually exclusive, hierarchical parts. At each level of analysis, the problem is divided into two distinct categories, making it easier to pinpoint root causes and develop solutions. The method forces clarity and logical progression, ensuring that every potential cause is accounted for.
Here’s a lighthearted example: Imagine you wake up, planning to make breakfast for your family, only to find that you’re out of eggs—even though you went grocery shopping yesterday! Instead of panicking, you apply a tree diagram to analyze the root cause.
By structuring the problem this way, you can systematically work toward solutions: improving your grocery shopping process, double-checking your list, or choosing alternative stores with better inventory tracking.
Why Can’t AI Just Do This for Me?
You might ask, “Why don’t I just let AI analyze problems like this for me?”
AI is a powerful tool, but when it comes to problems specific to your company, industry, or personal life, you have the best context. This framework doesn’t replace, AI but enhances your ability to collaborate with it. By breaking a problem down systematically, you can ask AI more precise questions or validate AI-generated insights to ensure you’re targeting the actual root cause.
Next time you face a massive problem, try using a tree diagram. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you can define the root causes of the problem and come to a clear solution!
